Efficiency with basic math facts and computational strategies is emphasized along with basic algebraic reasoning and symbols. These building blocks are utilized to develop an awareness of practical application of mathematics in all areas of life through word problems and mental math scenarios.

The students are expected to be able to explain their mathematical thinking in detail, which helps them build a strong mathematical vocabulary.
